I have been struggling for weeks trying to debug a problem that has cropped up with my printer.

    Basically have replaced everything.

What it appears to be is after some amount of time the Z axis must stop lifting properly for layers.

Here is an example, it printed the first layer, and then the second layer tried to print basically at the same Z height and pulled the first layer all up.

I have had this happend with a 20x20x20 cube as well, about half way through the cube it started to never lift the Z axis anymore and just drug the nozzle over itself every layer.

I'm out of ideas on how to fix this.

I would reflash the software using the most recent off robo site. Go to Ardeno and reflash it.

Not likely a firmware issue, but go for it.
    It is more likely electrical.
Since you didn't list what 'everything' included, I'd start by suggesting checking the wiring from the Z steppers back to the RAMPS.
Then check the stepper drivers on the RAMPS, then the RAMPS itself. If you have spares, that is the order I would swap them in to test with.

The most recent upgrades have been New X carrage. which I had the whole thing apart. I also just put new nozzle on it.

    I'll check the wiring.

It wouldn't be firmware firmware doesn't just stop working :). Doesn't look like they have changed the firmware in a long time anyway ( I have the leadscrew update firmware on it )

Edit: Just pulled the bottom cover off and noticed my fan was not on both pins. maybe the board was overheating? Rest of the wiring still looks good. Gonna try it with the boards fan plugged in correctly this time :)

Yes, overheating opens up a Pandora's boxof possible symptoms which can in general be summed up as "won't work"

And now its happening again..z axis works great on first layer..then does not lift for second layer. Tripple checked the fan.

No idea whats going on now.

But it did work at some point?

Trying to rule out other issues.

Maybe with the fan not working it could have fried the z driver on the board?
