I've been printing OK, but sometimes the prints have some cruddy mess on them.

Is this due to being to low on the z axis or is it due to another reason?

If you look at the top the guitars headstock is crummy.

I use the abs/PLA version. Using Black PLA
    I heat to 200, 190 after that
    Bed heated to 55

Electric vinyl tape. Hair spray: redken for men (hold still)

When I have seen a problem like that it has been because the print has become partly unstuck (sometimes a little warped) and lifted very slightly off the bed.

Once the nozzle hits a slightly raised print (even just a few tenths of a mm) it digs in and creates a mess.

Could the hot end be too low causing the lifting?

Doesn't look like the hot end was too low. If it were, you would probably see blobs of plastic all over the print where too much plastic had been extruded for the height and had squeezed out from around the nozzle area.

Are you having similar problems with smaller prints?

I am having issues with getting the PLA to stick properly onto the glass bed. I got success when using vinyl tape. But small details I noticed got bunched up crud. Sometimes this crud or blobs stick to the print head and then gets moved ruining the print.

Haven't tried a large print yet!

I know everyone has their favourite PLA sticking recipe but try this...

Make a watery solution of PVA wood glue (like Aquadhere) - about 20% glue by volume, rest water. Paint it onto a separate glass sheet which can be fastened onto the Robo bed (with bulldog clips). Warm up the bed so the water evaporates and leaves a misty film of PVA glue on the glass.

PLA sticks to this PVA film absolutely rock solid especially if you use a brim and warm the bed to about 50-60c during the print. In fact it sticks almost too well because the best way (sometimes the only way!!) to get the part off is to rinse the glass sheet and part under water then put the glass sheet/part in the freezer. 10-15 mins later and the part just slides off the glass. PVA residue cleans off the glass with water.

This technique is not my invention. Many forums recommend this for PLA.

if you want finer detail switch to a smaller nozzle, and go to a higher resolution print.. Theres only so much detail you can get out out .4 nozzle.

I am getting some improvement depending on the model. I also been creating my own models to see if they are an improvement. Stay tuned.
