I have an ABS print that has a layer separation and I was wondering how I can go about repairing it would dabbing a small amount of acetone on the inside of the print where the split is occurring be the best way to heal this split or should I just go ahead and separate it apply acetone to the edges and then place it back together as accurately as I can.

Or are there any other solutions I have not thought of yet

    Thanks

If you can push it together: do that, swab some acetone over the top and hold for a few minutes.

If it's a crack, you can fill it in with ABS goop.

do I add enough for it to seep in between the layers so the two layers completely melt together or is this a surface thing only

Nail polish brush over the top. Amount probably depends on thickness of your part. The idea is that it is wicking into the crack, dissolving a thin layer, and resolidifying.
