I guess I never updated this thread (was all busy with a new ROBO). think at the time I was ashamed that I gave up.
Repetier did not solve the problem. I got a couple of prints out of it. But it continued to fail in the same way. If I used G29, it would stop going up, or skip layers. If I excluded G29 it would work, but not be able to print decently because the bed wasn't level.
Upon receiving he new one, it worked. I updated the firmware (probably not a great idea), but point being, I updated it with the same firmware that was on the previous model. I can only imagine there was something wrong with the RAMPS? It made no sense, but I did run into one other person at least that has had this problem.

There's an obvious "were the steps for the Z rods correct" question, to which I must answer yes, they were. Why was G29 killing it? No idea, but it seemed to. I mean, I never solved it, so all evidence is anecdotal.

    Interesting.

    Thanks for sharing!

I just greased my Z rods, and slightly loosened the zip tie on the X axis.

The prints are completing now, however are pretty badly ribbed.

It does seem like sometimes these printers lose their brain during the print.

    ewwww
    Fix your extruder steps...

well, you're pretty good on dimensions? Maybe a touch tall? looks like extruder has way too many steps per mm
