Sorry this might be somewhere else but I couldn’t fine it.

I just got my printer today :D with no startup cd, but got it running using mattercontroller 1.1. My printer has the self-leveling bed and other recent stock upgrades :) . any print I do with any amount of elevation to it the sides get really rough and holy (see picks). My first print was the 20mm cube and was rough but the circle calibration was fine. The extruder temp is at 185c and the bed at 55c and quality is on medium.

Any ideas ….. is it a temperature, belt, bed or print quality thing? Not sure where to start?

    Thanks for the help

The blue PLA that comes with the printer needs a higher temp for good prints.

Set both extruder fields in section 10 to 205.

Also the cubes will have issues at the default speeds due to insufficient cooling, especially with high temp prints.

After you start the print, set the Speed (Section 27) to .5

    ok I will try that.

is it just the just the blue demo material that is like that? I also bought a roll of the red..will those temps be different?

You'll likely have to do a bit of tweaking with each roll, even of the same color, to find it's prime temp.

Filaments with dyes seem to have higher temps from what I've seen and read so far.

    Nature of the beast sadly.

    Much Better Thanks.

Guess I'll use this print every time I start a new roll to get it down before printing.

    Many thanks

Did you get the code entered for the auto leveling?

    It's the G29 code in section 9 of the image below, but without the ;

So your start code should read

    G28 ; home all axes
    G29 ; auto level
    G Z5 F5000 ; lift nozzle

(Unless you used the G-Code method for entering your offset, in which case reference this thread )

My code doesn't have any g29 in it. this is what it looks like. you cant see it in the screen shot but at the end of the start g code section it has G29 ; probe bed

My print head and bed go through the motions of auto leveling and it looks pretty good to me when it starts to print (I did the circle calibration and that also came out well on the first few layers to finish) but I am new to this so let me know if you see something I'm missing.

If it goes through the motions of probing the bed in 9 locations you should be fine. Just wanted to make sure you had it in there.

Now it will be a matter of getting use to the printer and what tweaks you can make to make it better.

I'm so excited to finally have the printer and be able to use it:D

Is there a general rule of thumb for how a certain setting change will affect the print?

If there is, I'm not yet aware of it. I've only actually had mine for 1 month as of tomorrow. =p

Google, youtube, reprap wiki, and this forum. Thats pretty much my reference, I mainly do searches here. Experimenting is a great way of learning as well ;)
