This is my second day with my new printer. I have it dialed in well enough to make some decent prints. I am noticing some ripple that manifests itself in the Z axis and is consistent with the pitch of the Z axis lead screw, which appears to be 1/4-20. I am thinking with 2 drive shafts they tug the head back and forth due to slight offsets as the head advances but I am prepared to be wrong. Is this expected behavior? Can it be tweaked out?

This kind of Z artifact is known as a common problem. A fair bit of effort is going into finding a solution right now. Check out the thread "Z Axis - Precision and Accuracy" for the status.
