I was going to ask if anyone could help with a problem I have. I have downloaded the file above down from the Sketchup 3d warehouse. It's the helm of the USS Enterprise. It was printing fine up until it got up to the dark part. It printed all necessary support for the needed overhang just when it got to the part it stopped on the darker sections. Would anyone know how it is possible to edit the darker parts? Thanks for you help

Try repairing the STL with the automated repair tools in Netfabb. Working with STL files is an exercise in futility. Netfabb does not need to be installed on your computer as they have partnered with Microsoft and have netfabb set up in an Azure cluster at this url:

    https://netfabb.azurewebsites.net

Login with or create an Live account, upload the STL, wait a minute or two while it does it's thing, then download the fixed version of the file.

3D modeling for 3D printing is not (at all) simplistic.
Excellent skill to learn if you intend to do a lot of printing :)
