    I'm struggling.
I have a first version of the R1, ABS white (From Robo3D), temps is 230 and 75 (can't go above or I have an error message). I have put a bed sheet on the printer to act like a closed chamber. The temperature in the room is around 23. I put spray glue on the bed but it warp a lot.
Any advice ? Should I upgrade the firmware to go above the temperature (230 & 75) ? Is it the bed that is too cold or the extruder ?
The fan is always off but shouldn't it be on to fasten the cooling of the ABS ?
I understand ABS is the toughest thing to print but I have at least 5 reels of ABS and I don't want to throw them away.

Is there other material that gloss in Acetone as the ABS does ?

    Thanks for your help

    1) No fan as a general rule for ABS (there are exceptions)
    2) ABS is finicky about the first layer height
    3) ABS is finicky about bed temp (75C is way too low) think 95C to 110C
    4) ABS warps if you look at it funny, the cover is a good start, see if you are staying around 45C to 50C under it.

All of which are reasons why I now print with 'something else' :)
There is almost no specific reason for ABS as whatever spec you look at there is something else that beats it.
Price is the only reason to want to use ABS.

Failed print to price ...goodbye abs lol. I think these guys have you taken care of but google abs slurry. Ive never used it but heard it helps

ABS slurry will help with first layer adhesion but really can't help warping and delamination on later layers. Pads/brims on corners can help but I have seen ABS pull up the center of a pad if it really wants to warp as you build up layers.

    Bingo.
Biggest issue I had with ABS was interlayer bonding well above the (hot) bed.
Directed heat (with IR heat lamps) helped a little, but it still is not a heated chamber.

I kept two rolls for the longest time and finally donated them to somebody (some poor sucker still paid too much even free).
Don't get me wrong, I did print a lot of stuff with ABS including this:

    http://www.thingiverse.com/make:90476

As you can tell in that model we used the warp and crack of ABS to our advantage :)

Wow, I know ABS is a PITA but I didn't realize it had so many haters. My Delta (before it croaked) was actually half decent with ABS as long as I remembered to put the heavy plastic bag over it and make the appropriate sacrifices to the gods of warping and delamination.

Just no reason to deal with it, so we don't :(

Just out of curiosity, what do people recommend when you need the higher temperature properties of ABS?

Come on poor ole ABS doesn't need oil to season it, it has that going for it ;-)

I use ngen, xt, or petg.

Edit:abs still is icky cuz the nozzle needs the oil not the filament haha! Kidding

BluPrint. Better thermal properties than ABS (higher Tg). Stronger. Prints a lot like PLA.

Don't get me wrong PETG and others are fine, but if you specifically need the heat resistance of ABS then BluePrint wins with the highest glass transition temp.

    :)

If you need that then you need it. I have still got a spool and a half of BluPrint.

Like you pointed out there are other just plain stronger filaments, but the heat resistance is what makes ABS generally a good choice (material wise). If it were only easier to print. Fortunately things like BluPrint and Alloy 910 make it moot.

The longer we go the more material options we get, it is a great time for printing.

I don't even think ABS prints are that strong I think its some leftover old school mentality that want to use it.. they shatter like everything else..but suck to print.( stinks!!!!!!, warps, bridging sucks, not really strong ...etc ). THE ONLY +'s I can see for abs is Solvent welding and acetone smooth bathing.. neither of which I have ever done or care to do.

I just gave away my last roll of it. Never buying it again.

PETG works great for me and is my favorite. ( its a little bendy compared to abs & pla..so thats the only downfall I have seen with it ..so I just print it thicker or more infil or something if I need it to be stiffer.
