Okay so I have a robo 3d r1 (not plus), and every time I try to print something the first 15 or so layers go down fine but then the hot end drops down into the model causing gaps in the print.

Here's some pictures of a print I had to cancel.

Well, what is your configuration.h Z steps value? (What firmware did you modify and load)
There are several flavors and the incorrect one will not work (since it will not match your hardware):
    Beta, R1, R1+, R1 w/leadscrew update...

Are there any errors in the GCode console?

    try a different slicer then.
Worst case it may be a defective / weak stepper driver for the Z steppers.

I have tried cura and a similar thing happens there. It seems like the z rods turn backwards on certain layers.

The rods turning backwards would be a slicer issue (since it generates the GCode that controls the printer).
Steps getting skipped could be a weak/de-tuned stepper driver. The r1 shares the two Z steppers across a single driver card on the RAMPS.

One last thing I found out that my z steps per mm is 2267.72 is this right for an r1 with no lead screw upgrade?

Thank you for the help. After updating my firmware to the proper steps per mm and still having this problem, I ordered some stepper drivers off Amazon. Do you have any advice on taking the old ones out.

They are not complicated it is a straight-forward mount on all of the steppers. You need to remove the top, remove the bottom and probably remove the X axis off of the rods as well. You might get away with leaving the X in place if you can reach the couplers to disconnect the stepper drive shafts with the cover removed. If not you will need to remove the stepper mount screws and drop the threaded rod down through the bottom so you can disconnect the couplers from the threaded rods.

Good luck. Just go slow and pay attention to where things mount/connect.
    Take pictures as you go.

It will take an hour or more with care, but it is not super complicated.

Is there a ceritan direction I need to mount them? It looks like they can be mounted either way.

? Physically or electrically. The physical mounting is not terribly critical that they be lined up exactly the same orientation. Well, 'up' and 'down' are obviously important :) Other than that not so much.

Odd to see how well the first layers go down and the rest go to crap. Have you checked to make sure the threaded rods are oiled and that you ramps fan is working?
