I recently learned that the bed and extruder temperature is controlled by PWM. It would also appear the material cooling fan is controlled by PWM as well. Does that mean a specific type of fan must be used so that you can control the speed with PWM?

If so, what are the relevant specs for a cooling fan?

    DC 12v

    Pretty much it :)

For a fan PWM changes the RMS effective value of the DC being sensed by the fan. More pulses->more DC (and less pulses -> less DC)

So you are saying any fan will work, brush type, brushless etc. Correct?

If it is a 12v DC fan it will work. How quiet it is and how efficient it is are the price differences :)

For example: Noctua makes great fans (not cheap ones, but good ones).

When I installed my dual fans, at first, I wanted quiet dual fans so I got the Scythe Mini Kaze fans and yes they were quiet but absolutely no air flow. So I have now replaced them with Evercool fans and they have been awesome.
