I recently acquired the printer and every time I try to print something around at the 10% mark it says my filament has run out when I have a whole spool loaded into it. The previous owner said this has never happened to him. Has someone else had this problem and can help?

You must be mistaken or have a modified R1+ -- it did not have Filament Runout sensors.

With my R2 I was getting the same thing. I ran my filament through the other hole in the sensor (closes to the edge) and I haven't had an issue since. If you hadn't already solved your issue I hope that helps.
