Make sure all other software that uses the printer is not running. You can only have one talking to the USB device at a time.

Frankly it could be a bad AVR (the arduino mega) if nothing is talking to it.

yet it does detect the usb, and the green and orange lights show.

i did order another ramps/arduino/screen for spares a few days ago so will see i guess

Did you try a different USB cable or port on your PC to make sure it wasn't one of those flaking out?

Yea, that is also a frequent issues since people (myself included) have the box of USB cables they dig through when they need one and no telling how old that sucker is :)

One other thing that can help is a powered USB HUB between the computer and the printer. This is because the printer (the Arduino Mega board really) is a hungry beast and often pulls more current than the USB ports are happy with.

That's why I always had the actual printer power supply ON when updating the firmware.

Then I'd cycle power after the Arduino said update was successful and go from there.

Just remember you have to unplug the USB cable to depower the arduino. the robo power switch doesn't help that.
