I was printing and came to the end of the filament but now there is a short piece not long enough to be pushed by the gear so it is in the print head. How do I get it out? I tried to push it out using more filament with the printer head hot but it didn't work. Suggestions?

Open up the extruder feed (remove spring-loaded screws and open it up)
pull it back out (you probably want to heat the hotend first).

If that won't let you reach it with a hemostat or a pair of needle nose pliers then you are likely going to need to dismantle/remove the hotend to get it out.
