I'm trying to print a decorative pen holder, but I'm having trouble in MatterControl. For some reason, it wants to print this ugly, pointless base on the first layer (even though I have support structures off).

I would like it to start printing like it is in pic #2 however - what do I need to do to get it that way?

    The first few layers:

    How it should be:
    IdealBase.PNG

I've also attached the STL file. Advice please?

When I run it through repairs it says that one or more objects is invalidly defined.
What repairs have you done/used? I would suggest starting with Netfabb free edition.

It also complains about self-intersecting surfaces.

Not sure that the repaired one I posted is even printable. When I look at it in preview it is still trashed. Your model needs some work... (and there is only so much you can do with an STL).
