Are you trying to remove the entire extruder or just the nozzle?

Then the assembly guide I posted for you shows how to do that.

    1) remove black boot (careful the thermistor will be loose do not move it)
    2) heat the extruder to 240 or close
    3) use two wrenches to remove nozzle. 1 to hold the heater block and the other to remove the nozzle.

Once you get the nozzle loose you can cool it down for the final removal.

The hexagon IS the default for the R1 and has been for a long time.
When did you buy the printer?

The one before the hexagon was the J-Head (and the nozzle is NOT removable).

Your get a better Idea of what's going on if you pull the whole extruder.
First heat it up, then pull the filament out.
Now let it cool. Place a magazine on the glass bed to protect it.
There are 2 electrical plugs to disconnect,( Heater and thermistor ).
Just above the small fan are the 2 screws that hold the extruder in. Take them all the way out.
The extruder will usually drop, if not just wiggle it a little and pull down.
Remove the rubber boot and use two wrenches to remove the nozzle.
I usually just replace the nozzle, they only cost a dollar something, but you can try cleaning it.
Now look thru the entire extruder. you should be able to see thru the filament path.
You can get a pack of 5 nozzles on Amazon for about $6 something.
    Good luck Frank

The allen key came with the R1. Just push it in the head of the screw like you would a regular screw driver.

There are connectors in the wire loom for them down by the extruder.
