I place the pla into the print head and a small amount extrudes initially when I put it inside the slot . Then when I go to use the gear to extrude it through it does not push any more through . It then begins to melt up above the extruder . Not sure how it is doing this but heres a picture . [IMG]

Is the fan on the extruder working?
It must be or you will get what is called 'heat creep' where the heat is moving up out of the melt zone and that will certainly cause you issues.

The small all-metal units (like the hex and E3D just can't tolerate not having that fan... The melt zone is too close (that is how you keep the size down). Good job.
