Are you keeping the filament dehydrated?

Most people keep their filament in a bin with some dehydrators in it. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Stack-On-SPAD...UTF8&qid=1407255389&sr=1-8&keywords=dessicant

Other people use gun dehydrators as well.

If you stick it in the tub it should dehydrate eventually.

    As far as rapid dehydration:

The ultimate option is to put the filament inside a vacuum for a day or so. That will suck out ANY moisture.

I hear if you put the filament in an oven at ~50C (below 150F) or so that the filament should dry out. Though I've also heard of people ruining a spool being too hot, so use caution if you try this approach.

Is spool hydration the cause of this? is this common? (i live in Nebraska and we have very humid summers.)
should the filament be sealed in an airtight container? how long can it be left out of the container.

That sure looks like spool hydration but print quality isn't my forte. It's either that or a temp issue, perhaps too high? I'm not sure I don't print much pla/pha

You should always store your filament in an airtight container. Ideally you should never leave it out, but you kinda have to for printing. I've seen people design houses for the filament on the printer so they never are exposed to air.

well damn ha ha. as far as dehydrants will good old fashioned rice work?

and could it be a lack of cooling problem? I didn't have any active cooling on this print.

Rice isn't actually a desiccant. That's a rumor that I don't know where it started.

Cooling could definitely cause this. Especially if one side is cooled and the other isn't

    are there household dehydrates?

i will try again with active cooling and see what i get out of it.

Usually things include those little desiccant packs. Though most people tend to just throw those away.
