When I try to move the Z axis manually in Repetier, I keep getting the error that the end stop is engaged, even if I try to move the extruder up. Any thoughts?

sounds like you've got a short. Follow the switch to the ramps board and see if there's any loose wire shorting out. Otherwise your switch might be bad. Does it click when you try and activate it?

I already checked for shorts and didn't find any. Also, as far as I know the click in a limit switch is mechanical rather than electrical, so I still have no idea why the extruder won't move up.

try unplugging it and see if you still get the error. Just be ready to do an e-stop if it does home

This is the exact error I get when trying to move the Z-axis up.

    2:14:23 PM: echo:endstops hit: Z:0.00

You have to home before you can try and move the axis

Thank you, that worked. Although, I am curious as to why this needs to be done.

The way the controls work on the movement is it needs to know where 0,0,0 is to safely navigate within the bounds of the print area. For all it knows it could be at he max value and a random +10 could cause it to move out of bounds and cause damage. Moving to 0,0,0 is a safety precaution as well as a necessity to know where it is.
