I was printing just fine for about a week. I am not sure what happened but the extruder is now home at almots the top of the print area. I have looked around for a solution but the only thing I can find is people saying to check the limit switches. I did this and they seem fine. I would offset the z axis in macros but offsetting 7-8 inches seems excessive. I manually turned down the screws to bring the head back down to the bed but it seems to be too close now as it is pushing the layers around as it prints.

The Z home switches are what control this.
So if it is homing high up -- the the switches are triggered high up.
Only one has to trigger for it to register "Z home"

If everything looks OK from outside you may need to open the bottom and trace the wires back to the RAMPS board.

If you have a meter read the resistance across the switches (with everything off) and see if they are working (open/close) correctly. (closed -> near zero ohms, open -> really high ohms)

A bad switch could do this too
