Google RAMPS 1.4, there are a lot of pictures and diagrams.
You can easily identify from that the Z axis stepper driver.

One thing to note is that the boards are mounted upside down relative to the printer so it will have to be adjusted with the printer lying on its side.

One of these days I'd like to move the boards and power supply to their own enclosure, but that is a different story.

Robo has the assembly videos on YouTube so if you really want the extra insight you can watch that and see how it is all assembled/put together.
It is not difficult to do with the bottom cover off and the printer stood on its sideas @Stephen Capistron has indicated.

Ok. Cool. thanks everyone. I'll looking on the Goog for images of the RAMPS 1.4 board. Any other recommendations so I don't screw up things too bad? :)

And things went sideways in a good way.

Checked the voltage on the stepper motor boards. Tuned the Z just a bit, but it seemed to be in relatively good tune.
Then, I checked the fan, just for kicks.

    Yup. Totally fried.
    I need a new 40mm cooling fan.

    Kinda makes sense now.
    I think it's solved. I think. Maybe

THANK YOU to everyone who helped. I really, really appreciate it.

Excellent catch. The RAMPS will very often (not quite always, but often) overheat without that fan.

Any 12v 40mm fan will do.

I'm printing a calibration cubes to test this theory.
Oh, and to solve the fan problem...

Figured it would work for the purposes of this test. Don't worry, it's set to LOW.

    The results are in.
The Green Cubes were just printed after a series of the following steps:
    - oiled and seasoned nozzle
    - recalibrated Z stepper motors
    - bottom removed from printer and a big old desk fan blowing on the boards

5 mm calibration cubes with EXACTLY (within 0.1 mm) 5 mm cubes and a total height of 25.04 mm.

By Jove, I think I got it.

I consider this thread now SOLVED.

    Nicely done.

The FAN on the RAMPS was a post-beta thing, but they did backfit the beta printers with them if you wanted.
The stepper drivers can over heat, the ramps output MOSFETS overheat (this can be more fatal since they tend to die, not just shut off)
