I have been using blue painters tape to help with adhesion to the bed (sometimes it works too well). The last couple of prints I've noticed that the extruder is ripping the tape on the first layer or two. Also, the very last print tried to start and the extruder tip seemed to push against the bed during the home maneuver and just stopped. Do I need to adjust the Z ?

What is your z offset set to now? Adjusting that our even making sure you do a paper leveling to make sure your x axis is as level as possible may help.

There is no 'default' for the printer.
Some software may have a default setting that gets plugged in, but I do not know.

    Check your startup GCode:

    G28 ; home all axes
    M565 Z-1.0 ; set the offset for auto-leveling mechanism
    G29 ; run auto-level

for the M565 command. Worst case save the generated GCode to disk and open it with a text file editor. This should be near the start.
