    so my printer is trying to print in mid-air. i gave it the G28 command and it executed perfectly and touched the bed but when i try to print it doesn't touch the bed during the calibration period. i gave it the M119 command and its reporting everything as open. the limit switches on both ends look fine to me. i restarted the printer and laptop I'm printing off of completely. I'm stumped.

    What is your entire startup GCode script?
    Are you using the stock firmware and the M565 (autoleveling Z offset command) or are you using something else?

    Either the offset is wrong (or you didn't use it) or one of the Z switches is likely not working right (stuck perhaps).

    My money is on this :D I have one machine that I didn't do a very good job upgrading the switch mounts and does the exact same thing. Give it a "wiggle" lol.

    After you home with G28 and then auto-level with G29 what does M119 respond with?

    With the stock firmware you want to have a G28; and a G29; as @WheresWaldo mentioned and in between them you normally have the autoleveling offset... M565 Z-1.0; or some custom value other than -1.0 which is dialed-in for your printer.

    G28;
    M565 Z-1.0;
    G29;

    Put that in after the LAST G28; and before for the G29;

    start there and then tweak it as needed to get it perfect. More negative (i.e. -1.1) is further from the bed and less ngative (i.e. -0.9) is closer to the bed.

    Well, if you don't explicitly call it out (the autoleveling Z offset) I have no idea what it defaults to :)
    I have some scientific wild guesses based on what I know of Marlin, but ... no research.

    still acting up. what I noticed is I hit print and it goes to the side then touches the plate then goes up a unit then up again then moves to the second calebration spot but touches there and all the other remaining spots...

    That is a bad Z switch I suspect. Review this video:

    Not that the switch is flat out "bad" but likely out of position slightly.

    Anytime during leveling that the Z continues to go up (when it should do down) that is because one of the Z home switches is triggered. This tells the printer it is already "on the bed"

    Be careful. Some of them are "triggered" when closed -- not when open. The Z axis on the R1 is inverted from the X and Y endstops behavior. So put the Z on the bed and then see what it reports and compare to what it reports with the Z well off the bed.
    If they report the same in both cases... something is indeed broken or off. Review the video as well, it may well get you sorted or at least let you narrow down where the problem is.

    yeah like I said when I made the post, I tested the switches manually and they're functional. the only thing i can think of is i did something when i raised the print head manually. but when I inspect everything again i don't see anything wrong. i watched the video and its nothing i dint look for yet :( the switches are reading triggered when they're supposed to.

    What you likely did was unseat the Z switches and now one or more of them is not correctly positioned.
    Which is why I suggested the video, he covers that as well. Plus you will see exactly how it is supposed to work. It could be a wire come loose or something else, but I would strongly suspect the switches.
