I tried installing LCD on my R1+ and it's only displaying rows of blocks on screen. I checked the connections and tried swapping the wires. Also checked the contrast and nothing seems to be working. I got this screen which others have said it works just by connecting it:

[REPRAPGURU] 2004 LCD Smart Display Controller Module with Adapter for 3D Printer Controller RAMPS 1.4 Arduino Mega Pololu Shield Arduino RepRap
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015NDAKE4/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm running on the V1 firmware. Tried to update the firmware through MatterControl but it just keeps saying V1. Am I doing something wrong, maybe bought the wrong one? I'm still new to this.

It's the same problem mentioned in this thread except mine didn't resolved itself.

Contrast is too high or the LCD is defective or it is plugged in incorrectly (most will let you swap the two plugs physically, but they only work correctly one way).

That LCD should work without any firmware updates.

That doesn't look to be the full graphics lcd display so you shouldn't need any firmware changes. But like Mark said, could be a dud.

The symptoms sound like contrast too high, but if adjusting the contrast rheostat does not help it could be broken. I had one last weekend that came out of the box that way.

Yes, I tried adjusting the contrast by turning the knob left and right. The squares would fade in and out but no texts. Tried switching the wires and they both have the same display. I didn't want to upgrade the firmware if I didn't have to. Or should I upgrade to v2 anyway? It's probably a messed up screen.

There is no reason to switch from the R1+ V1 to V2 firmware.

V2 has nothing for you with this issue and I didn't see any reason to switch to that version based on a side by side comparison of the original R1+ firmware and the V2.

I read that and I didn't want fix what's not broken either. I just saw a customer review said he had to upgrade to v2 to get his working. I'll get another screen. I wanted to try this one cuz it was cheap and small. Thanks for your help!
