Following the theme of printing lists of services...

If you want to create a scale replica of a complex surfaced object, you're probably going to be better off with a scan than modeling it yourself. Here are some sites that provide service or are selling scanners:

    http://www.123dapp.com/
    http://lynxlaboratories.com/
    http://www.makerscanner.com/
    http://www.david-laserscanner.com/
    http://reconstructme.net/

not quite 3D scanning but cool...
    http://make3d.cs.cornell.edu/
    http://3dprintingsystems.com/products/software/photo2mesh/

I also run a small 3D scanning business and can run scans for ~$25 depending on the object. PM me if interested.

Is it possible to scan something so you can get an exact sized replica model? For making accessories for a piece of hardware? For example say I wanted to make a case for an iPhone. Could you 3D scan the iPhone to give me an exact digital replica so I could design a case around it?

    Just wondering if its possible.

@harry, I use a David 3 SL-1 setup. Also, an FYI, but I was trying to reply on my kindle last night and it wouldn't open up the keyboard tray when I was in the reply window. I've never had that happen before although I usually don't post on forums frequently.

@Justin, yes, the whole point of 3D scanning is to get an exact sized replica.
That being said, I probably wouldn't use it for something like an iphone that is a pretty simple shape. I would just measure that with a pair of calipers and model it. Or, even easier, search model services like grabcad.com for a model that someone else made that you can download or simply download a case off of thingiverse.com.

You really want to use it for things that are too complicated to model efficiently or that you really want to capture surface details that you couldn't possibly model. I have a scan of a sea shell up at my blog printedsolid.com that is a good example of both of these things.

Obviously this price doesn't include shipping of the object. May I ask where you are located? I'm going to need to replicate motorcycle parts for prototyping, Some are going to be better to do by caliper, but I thought it might be easier in come cases to scan a part and make a model from that.

Right. Not including shipping. I'm in Newark,DE. My planned focus is really local business, but I'm not sure the market is quite there yet. If you're within an hour or so (between Philly and Baltimore) be willing to do on site scans for objects that are difficult to move, but we definitely get outside of the $25 range there. I'm really just getting started so I'm probably charging a lot less than the real value of my time right now.

@Printed Solid, I'm in the USA! and I think SPyKER is also. haha. $25 if you come out here? jk. Do you think that it is worth it? Is it great quality? If it is worth it, I might buy that, but then again would this be better?

It all depends on what you are doing. Not sure about that kickstarter. They're not very forthcoming with what technology they are using. You're also limited to scanning what fits in that box. Personally, I want to be able to scan people, sculptures, vehicles, etc. in addition to small objects that can fit on a platform.

The David thing is in English. They're based out of Germany so you can get German support as well. For the price, it is an extremely professional package. the SL-1 comes with a tripod, an anodized aluminum mount for the scanner and projector, a projector with lensing to project onto a small area, a camera, calibration boards, and the software. You can also build your own setup with a projector, a camera, and their software. They have freeware, but your available resolution is capped.

So far, I'm very happy with it and would recommend it.

Don't forget the beautiful UNIscan. The best part is that, at $28,900, if you can afford to buy one for yourself you can probably afford to buy one for me too!

The iPhone was just a simple example I used. I'm thinking more technical like replacement parts. Where the size has to be exact and holes need to line up.

@Ahmed, when you find someone handing out those scanners, I'll take one too!
@Justin, yes, replacement parts are a great example.

with 123D catch It seems like all somebody needs is a good camera, lighting and a system of taking the pics. Maybe a turntable with adjustable boom arm that rotates around the table taking the pics at exact distances and angles.

I dont thing 123D catch is a professional app but seems like it will work for a hobbyist.

Probably sounding like a broken record here, but the David software does a great job with fusion. I'm sure you can do it with meshlab and other programs, but I haven't tried it yet.
