I saw that yesterday. Of course the camera used is way more than $50. Pretty cool setup.

I get niece, nephews, and neighbor kids all the time asking if I can print some random item/toy that I don't have a model for. A scanner would be nice to play with in those cases.

Still wanting to buy a Kinect V2 and hook that up to the PC for doing model scanning. This article got me thinking of it. https://channel9.msdn.com/coding4fun/kinect/3D-Scanning-with-Kinect-V2. The Kinect can be found for $99 new if you are patient and the adapter for the PC is about $50. Maybe both ideas can work together.

As long as it is "play with" then yes. Go for a scanner.
Otherwise I have yet to see something affordable that is really beyond that level.
I am sure they will get there eventually. The scanning part of the tech is there, just not the processing side.
