I have another chip in my bed. Can the heating element be removed and then be placed on the other side? With new magnets I was wondering if that would work. I haven't looked at the bottom much to know if something would stop that change

Should work. Be a bit of work, but should work :)
Easier to put a thin sheet of plate glass on top.

Plate glass, that is what I did, real cheap at places like Lowes and Home Depot or other building center. Note that in my area Home Depot will not cut to size like Lowes does.

I third a piece of glass on top. I hold mine on with binder clips. Makes it easier to wash.

Another option is to cover it with a bed liner like PEI or Polyimide.
