Being new to 3D printing, I'm still learning the basics, including things that seem to be omitted from all the tutorials I've found online. One of these is what to do with filament between print sessions -- leave it in the printer or extract it, then re-insert it for the next session. If the latter, just how long can one safely leave filament inserted in the print head? (It can take several minutes to remove a print, clean up, etc., before starting a new print.) Thanks for any advice!

For 99% of filaments it is irrelevant what you do. If you are long-term stopping printing for whatever reason then you may want to back out the filament and store it properly (in a cool dry -- low humidity -- environment) but in the day to day run of things? Nah.

If you are using the same spool repeatedly and frequently it is really unimportant. If not then it is really more important how you store the filament than whether you leave it in the nozzle :) That will not hurt anything.
