Yes the hole could easily be done I have seen examples of it. It would just need supports.
We should be able to build a pc board to do exactly what we want
    think along these line
a flat pc board with circuitry on top edge four pins come out bend 90 below the board. if we use pins we could simply plug the correct usb on(either male or female) then on the opposite side( the bottom) you have three connectors coming directly out of the board, one as an possible input and two as outputs( one for use as an output to the other wall if needed and the other going to power the cube function). That way we could use the same board for both sides since we could swap out what attaches to the pins on the top edge.

It would all be serial I believe so the actual paths should be fairly simple.

a very quick search yields this as a possible avenue this way we could add it to the pins , more configurable.

Not sure what you mean Jeff? The price and availability of solder mount USB both male and female are abundant and cheap (something I was looking at prior to mentioning it)

My only thought was if we made them pinouts we could use the same board for both type the receiving and the sending, then all we would have to do is switch the plug if we hard solder that connection we lose versatility. We could easily grap any pcb in our lot and throw on the correct plug and we are good for either one.

Actually i think the leads would have to change as well for right to left configurations Pin 1 would match to pin 4 on the other half

Oh well if we could do it in circuitry then maybe but might be too big of a hassle.

unless we could make it jumper adjustable then we would be good again.

I get what you mean Jeff but I do believe you are correct in your second statement of them flipping. I don't think getting the PCBs made up would be a big deal in order to only go "one way". Just to give a few more dimensions, based off of my design the top plate would be 86x86mm so you could make ANY top plate 10mm thick (at least, you could always go higher then the "base") that is 86x86 and that would fit into the cube. This should be big enough for pretty much any smart phone and most other ideas (Arduino screens, speakers, lights...). My next big challenge is how to make a speaker that works via the Iphone dock connector. I have found ZERO information online.

for blocks that don't need a lot of energy you could really just use a wireless power-transmitter, so you don't need any connection between them. I like the idea that you could build upwards also, so it makes.more of a 3d tower.

To get information about the speaker pins on iPhone you could buy a pair of cheap speakers, and open them up
