I have been having a tough time removing support structure from my prints. In some cases I need to take a hit knife to remove them. I have played around with settings but since I can only use matterslice at the moment I am not sure what else I can do

That is normal for MatterControl and most of the other free slicers.
They do not do very well with Supports.

If it is something you really need then consider Simplify3D.

Another vote for Simplify3D. It is worth it.

Yep, bought it on the first day and never had any complaints. If you're confused with any of the settings, just post a question in this forum... Worked for me. Spend the money, it's worth it!

I'm finding that it may be the way to go but I'm not ready to spend the cash just yet. Soon though

You can largely avoid supports it you are clever with how you design the models. Sometimes it is unavoidable.

Right now I'm still getting my feet wet with all sorts of models and issues so that I have a better grasp of print settings. So far everything I've designed can be printed with out supports. Most of the stuff that needs it are figurines I'm downloading for my kid.

Mostly cause organic creatures are not my strong point for modeling.
