After the Auto bed leveling runs am I suppose to be able to see a small gap in between the hot end and the bed. It seems really hard to get bed adhesion. If not how do I go about fixing it? (i'm printing with pla 220 hot end 60 bed temp.

The Z offset in the startup GCode.

More negative (i.e. -.5 instead of say -.4) is further from the bed. More positive is closer to the bed.

Yes you're supposed to see a gap. Otherwise the nozzle is pressed against the glass and would be unable to extrude filament
