I'm trying to scale down a set of rocket fins from thingaverse (thing:738992)

I've had no problem before, but now if I scale it down to .25 size, save the project then try to print, it's always done in > 1 second and never renders the layers. Can some .stl models just not scale?

Depends on the scaled size of the layers and the size of the nozzle (and other slicer settings)
You can end up with a combination that is not printable.

Reducing it that much might be an issue... totally model dependent (but wall/perimeter thickness is usually the killer)

Ah matter control :). I don't know if this is your issue or not but to make it work(matter control) I had to rotate the print job. I have no idea why this worked but the model would be a 1 sec print. Rotate it a bit and bam it takes off and works lol. I don't know why :).

Exactly why I picked up s3d :). So many weird things I fought that just went away so I could focus on production vs manipulating everything so I could maybe print lol

Bingo. I have had exactly... wait, let me do the math (divide by 4, carry the one...) ZERO slicer issues since switching.

    No: http://www.simplify3d.com
That is what he is referring to.
    A non-free (although worth it) slicer/printer front-end.
(Includes lifetime support and multiple machines.)

Exactly what @mark tomlinson says. Best money I've spent. Prints come out better. The only failures I've had is because I did something like forget adhesive on the bed lol. I tried all the free slicers and in my opinion they just arnt worth it. Simplify 3D is 150.00 for lifetime use. its 100% the best thing I did for my printers.
