Do the two rods adjacent to the z-axis screw get lubricated? The manual seems to imply that they don't. If so is it 3 in 1 oil or amber grease that should be used?

Ball bearings should use grease unless they are precision bearings (these aren't), the bearings on the two optical rails are and should be greased, any white lithium grease will work, actually nearly any type of grease is okay. The lead screw can also be lubricated and I tend to use a wax based lubricant because 3-in-1 collects too much dust for my tastes.
