Oh, heck yes. I upgraded mine to the hex caps... once using the old style was enough.

    Greetings,

Today I had my first "jam". The filament broke and some of it was stuck inside the aluminum hot end.

I reviewed the forum and came across this thread. I removed the fan and hex caps. I was able to remove the filament, reassemble it and continue my printing.

    My thoughts:

I suspect this will happen again.

This printer came with tools. Which told me this is a good hint there will be some issues and/or maintenance.
Part of the mechanics needs redesigning. For example, if this is a common issue, frequent removing the hex caps will eventually strip away the aluminum hot end. Not a good design. If this happens again I will provide a picture of the aluminum hot end. My suggestion would to use hairpin cotter pins to allow the hot end to stay fastened and allow users to quickly remove it.

Other than that, the printer is good.

If I run into more mechanical hiccups I will revisit this forum.

    Thank you,

    Jim

Season the hotend and add an oiler to prevent future jams with PLA.

    Greetings Galaxius,

Thanks for the tip and link to the thread. I'll try that.

Another concern I've noticed was the filament around the spool gets tangled or knotted. Perhaps this caused the issue with the filament breaking?

I'll review the forum and research some solution ideas.

    Thanks,

    Jim

The provided filament spool leaves a lot to be desired.

Yes, if the filament kinks, knots, our tangles it can snap. I recommend printing a top mount spool holder, preferably one that uses bearings. The easier the extruder can pull the filament from the spool the less likely the hobbed bolt will end up slipping and grinding.

    No tangles.
