This first layer is printing ultra slow. Any ideas what is causing the diagonal "waves"? Thanks in advance! (I uploaded the full images because they're not high resolution - hope that's OK.)

I tend to agree with Mark, but I've never seen a really definitive answer to why that happens.
Seems to be one of two things:
-You are too close and are building up a little back flow in the nozzle. As the pressure increases and decreases from the buildup, it drops thicker and thinner regions.
-the other possibility is that you've got 'dirty spots' on the bed. Think finger prints and things like that.

OK. That sounds logical. I thought I had mastered the z-height first layer, but maybe I'm going too close. I'll try pulling up a bit.

    Thanks!!

That is a really good idea. I think you might be a shade low (that or a bit of over extrusion). You can run ziggy's test to see if the exrtusion rate for that nozzle is a bit high and tweak.

I recalibrated the extrusion rate a while back. I was using a different brand of PLA. I'll recheck that also. Thanks for the tip.

I noted in an earlier post that it's somewhat comical that the extrusion factor's default value is to two decimal places.

I recalibrated the extrusion rate and it needed it. I started the next print with less squeeze on the first layer. I could actually see between lines onto the white vinyl for that first layer. It's been going for hours now and it looks fantastic. Thanks!

As a total new guy here, How does one calibrate the extrude rate? I think I may need to do this...
