Solved Probably a noob question; can't get ABS to stick

While this isn't the first printer that I have used, it's my first robo. I'm currently trying to print some stuff in ABS, and can't for the life of me get anything to stick. Current settings temp wise are 235 and 80 respectively on the hotend and bed. It seems to get the first couple of layers of the platform done and then the print will lose grip and start sliding around.

I've tried glue sticks and hairspray, both to no avail. I have experience on a couple of other printers (afinia 3d and a ultimaker 2), but none of the troubleshooting I've done for issues with those has helped me here.
any help would be greatly appreciated! (and please let me know if there's any more info I can give to help).
