When replacing hobbed bolt, found 3 bearings, two "snapped in" the carriage assembly and on the gear side of the filament drive that appears to be acting only as a spacer.

Is that "as designed" or a "make do" on the part of earlier owner? I have not found an illustrated parts breakdown and the replacement videos I've seen are not clear.

    Looks correct to me.
If you ever do have to disassemble or replace it you can use washers to be (extra) spacers for the bolt so that the hobbed section is centerted over the feed hole.

Not all hobbed bolts are the same length and the hobbed section may be in a slightly different spot, but it is still usually usable.
