Getting pretty tired of grabbing a flashlight to look at my prints as they run. So I went looking for options. I decided not to wire something into the existing power and went for a separate powered LED strip. Self adhesive backing made installation a breeze, and the remote lets me be lazy. This has the standard remote most led strips have with a bunch of color selections and a few flash, fade color changing options (pretty useless for me since I just want white light). It does have a dimmer, and the brightest setting is too bright, but if you need a lot of light...its there. Love it.

I got it at Home Depot

I am looking for an easy to install LED lighting that is directly around the extruder head. That way it will light up the print. When the lighting is above, it leads to shadows and I can't see the print

THe kit I got cost $40 for 8' of chromatic LEDs and the remote. I have them run up one side, across the top, down the side again, over 6 inches and back up the other side of the smooth and threaded rods, back across the top and down the other side. 8' is the perfect length.

This lights up the ENTIRE build plate.

there is lighting from both sides and the top.

No, this plugs into the wall. I didnt want to tap into the onboard power. There's a connector so I can easily disconnect it if I ever want to move the unit and not have to mess with the power cord. I made a small hole in the bottom back of the removable top (where the black stripe is) so it comes out with no chance of interfering with the bed.

I bought a stick on strip of 12v smd LEDs from ebay for cheap that you can cut to length and solder on your power wires. My plan is to connect them to the cold end fan power and stick them on the x carriage.

    Like this?

(sorry it is a little fuzzy--camera not happy with the way the light is in that shot)

That small strip of superbrights aims where the print head is at and can be turned on/off with a stand-alone switch.

I can try, but sadly the camera gets confused with the bright LED up close in focus there :)

See if this is any better. The LED bar aims directly at the print bed where the extruder is at.

Do the LEDa surround the head? [IMG]

This is an ideal type lighting, right
Next to the head so that you cN clearly see the extrusion.

Yea, darn good question. If you use the superbright LEDs even the mini strip of 4 I have lights up the board darn good from 6 inches away. You can clearly see the exrtruder and print area. Those seem awful close to the hotend.

I did not create that LED setup. I took a screenshot from someone else that post some time ago.

But it did look promising. My concern was the same in does the heat cause any issues on the LEDs?

It sure could but I believe they're made from poly-carbonate so maybe they're too temperature resistant to melt.
