I spent a good bit of time figuring out how to make a pencil holder for my son who is really into Pi. Now that I have it completed in sketchup, it exports okay as an sti but when I look at the slices in matter Control or Cura, none of the numbers show up. What is wrong with this?

The .skp from sketchup is attached but renamed .txt so it can be uploaded.

Geesh.. Slic3r seriously struggles with this.

Using the STL exporter in Sketchup I had to then run it through the free version of NetFabb to fix a lot of errors. Not sure if it due to the Sketchup exporter or the model itself. (Note my first intent is to blame the STL exporter as frankly I've had crappy lucky with it in the past and thus just moved to using blender3d).

Then brought it back into Slic3r and it chewed at it for a good 20 minutes to slice before it produced g-code.

However, I'm not sure I'd trust it would be printable as those are pretty small numbers compared to the projects I've been doing (which tend to push ABS for detail). Plus there isn't a lot in ways of support. I think in general you'd be better of creating a solid cup and printing the letters raised from the lip of the cup. I suspect it will be a much more solid piece.

Or enlarge the numbers so there is more solid

I can repair and slice it for you with Simplify3D, BUT you will need to edit the generated GCode to include your startup GCode (mine is simply a home all). Post me the STL so I don't have to mess with Sketchup if you want me to slice it.

Whoa that's gonna be hard to print

Ran it through netfabbs online repair tool. Seems to fix the non-manifolded edges

Yea, you still want me to slice it with Simplify?
It is not a solid outer shell, but a bunch of individual, very narrow, 'panels'?
They are not going to print easy. I am not sure this will print correctly.

I can slice @Mike Kelly fixed version and post it...but you might want to rethink that 'wall' on it.

I redesigned this to have the numbers twice as large and solid walls up to the top 10-12 mm. An important change was to create everything at about 6000 mm diameter. The creation and bending of the numbers at that size was much cleaner. When I scaled it back down to real life size, everything was nice and smooth. It's printing now and the jury will be back in about 6 hours from now.

Good luck. The hardest part I discovered after getting my first 3d printer was figuring out how to determine if something is printable.

Okay, here's a pic. I am giving this to my son as a paper clip holder. I am making a larger one for pencils. On the larger one, I am making the sides thin and have them flare out at the top to accommodate larger numbers. I am also making the letters extrude only a couple mm for strength.
