Title sort of says it all.

Running an R1 Plus, printer is stock.

The Z layers don't stack up printing a cylinder very nice, and every 6mm or so vertically seems to almost have a stripe pattern in the layer stacking.

I tried to get a closeup photo, but I could not get anything that looks good. I attached the best pic I could get.

I also have issues where there are "vibrations" in the print after it prints a feature that requires significant change of direction in the perimeter.

I've tried printing slower to no significant avail, although printing stupid slow helped with the x & y vibrations.

I know the print is usable, but I would like to clean it up.

Thoughts on any issues I may be having, or possible mods that may help? Thanks in advance!

    Calibrate the extruder.

If it is not under/over extrusion it may be a loose component in the drive (a belt, a pulley an LM8UU bearing)

    I'll go through calibration.

The belts seem tight (but not too tight, is there an actual spec for torque?), of course there is slop in the linear bearings, are they typically tight?

Tight, but not too tight is the spec for both :)

The linear bearings are usually not the problem, at least not until they get noisy.

Ahh, the bearings are not noisy, and I keep them lubed.

How much deviation is normal for this machine?

Also, I see motor vibration dampeners for the steppers. Are those any good for this issue? I'm not worried about noise, but print quality.

    Nothing visible is normal.
You should be able to get nicely smooth surfaces look in the projects sub-forum for examples people have done.
Sanity check the X and Y axis drives with the top off see if there is any play in them.

Could you explain what a "sanity check" is?

    Thanks

Make sure that nothing is loose. One of the more infamous issues is the drive cog on the motor shaft being loose. If the set screw is loose or missing that can be an intermittent loose issue. Grab the motor shaft and try to move the belt.

Depending on how comfortable you are with digging into firmware, it may be worth adjusting the acceleration/jerk values in the firmware so that it runs more smoothly (a popular no-purchase-necessary modification).

I don't recall off the top of my head what the current popular acceleration/jerk values are though.

Some of the slicers will let you play with them in a non-permanent fashion.

Running simplify 3d for a slicer. Obviously still have matter control as well.

So does the M204 command work for these units?

Any Gcode or Mcode that is part of Marlin will generally work with these machines unless it is for a feature they don't have.

So I just finished a model, printed it in PETG. It looks MUCH better, at least until I get 100mm from the build plate at which point there gets to be a lot more features, instead of a plain arc.

Just in case that brings any ideas.

So for putting in the M204 command into the scripts on S3D, where exactly would that go, and what value should I start with?

Oh, and everything seems tight on the machine, except I'm not a huge fan with how much slop is in the LM8UU bearings. How typical is that to have some slop between the rods and bearings?

You want to look in the Scripts tab in the Advanced process settings.

EDIT: here is a screenshot from the S3D forums.

And here is the actual forum posting about it.

Take notes, there are a lot of really useful custom settings you can put in your start/end Gcode.

This was (sadly) a rather late addition to the Marlin line otherwise (in general) @daniel871 is spot on. Almost all older GCode will work fine. If you are on the latest branch that @WheresWaldo this will work as expected, otherwise I am not certain. I can issue it in my GCode terminal, but that doesn't mean it is working :)

I think all of the Robo blessed versions of marlin are pre-1.1 so that may not work with them

So as far as using the M204 command to slow down acceleration, what value should I try, or what is the stock value?
