Would it be possible to fit the z-stop somewhere near the extruder nozzle? It would make things a lot easier.
I'd imagine that exposure of plastic parts to heat would be a concern, but what if the actual button was much farther up the extruder assembly and it used a metal implement for the remaining travel? Has anyone tried this before?

The main problem I see is that the plunger /metal implement you mention would have to be lower than the nozzle in order to register the height and that would interfere with travel when actually printing.

There are currently two similar mods that allow for easy adjustment of the z axis and either works just fine.

Matterhackers has now posted a description of a software only solution to the bed leveling issue. Yes! No hardware mods!
    https://www.matterhackers.com/news/automatic-print-leveling-in-mattercontrol
They have this wizard that lowers the head down to measure the actual height at three points on the bed. When the model then is sliced z-compensating commands are added to the gcode (watch those z-axis rods rotating while printing!)

They've even posted a video of a print on a "ridiculously unlevel bed"

    Regards, Daniel

So it is a bed compensating tool not a bed leveler.
Is there a standalone package or add on to repetier or how does it work.

Yes, bed compensation. Unfortunately I get the impression its part of their own sw but I haven't looked into it.

Yes looks like a replacement for Repetier. I may look into this a littlemore.... it's quite an interesting solution.

I installed MatterControl yesterday and stayed up pretty much all night playing with it. It has all of the settings I've grown accustomed to in Repetier-Host, but in a much prettier, user-friendly, and polished package. The automatic bed leveling is just icing on the cake :)

You think the bed leveling software will ever be added to Repetier-Host software?
This I think would help me a lot.

If people demand the feature and more software adds it, then Repetier would have to as well lest they lose market share.
