So my model of the R1 didn't come with an SD card reader, and I recently purchased an XXL LCD ramps smart controller from ooznest. I have no idea how to install this thing, and was wondering if anyone either has experience with this or knows of somewhere online I can look? Thanks! XXL-LCD-351x470.JPG

When did you get your printer? Are you positive you don't have a sd reader?

Installing an xxl lcd is easy

I bought my printer in April of last year. I followed the video of where to put it but when I turn the printer on the screen doesn't light up or anything.

Did you enable the LCD in the firmware? Or try to swap the LCD wires and see if that fixes anything

You shouldn't need to enable the LCD in the firmware. Are you sure you have the wires in the right plug? Pictures are always appreciated

Thank you everyone for your help!

The wires plugged into aux 2 is what I had to move over from aux 3 to fit the lcd adapter.

I guess it was just a bad connection, because I unplugged everything and put it all back together and now everything is working great!

The wires from Aux 3 were probably the old SD reader, you should remove that. Glad you got it working

Hi Mike. I read somewhere also that I would have to update marlin firmware? My Machine supposed to have been bought mid Jan but I'm having doubts. I do see a low laying sd reader, my adapter to the lcd is in shape of an L, so looked obvious I had to remove old reader plug and this adapter can most certainly only go one way, I have a lighted screen but no text or welcome etc. As always your 2cents worth a buck to us noobies. Thanks in advance, I'll take my reply sitting. AJ

If I understand correctly it depends on the display type. The RepRap Dsicount LCD (and clones) do not need any firmware modification to work. The Full Graphic LCDs, I think, do.

I have the former and can confirm that even on an older firmware that one works fine by just plugging it in. The Full Graphics ones I can't speak for.
