I see all these methods to keep our filament in a dry environment.

What I notice when my filament spools sit out on the desk for a few months at a time is that they become brittle, and break easily.

Wouldn't that be an indicator that the filament has dried out, and placing it in a box with desiccant would be counter productive?

    Just wondering. . . .

    Nope.
PLA gets brittle when it gets wet :)

Now, it getting brittle is not a complete loss of a spool, you can dry it back out.
