please help, my printer started having issues printing. After a few layers it's stops printing and the heater stops heating.

There are no issues when I'm preheating and moving the z axis up and down.

    E3d v6 volcano equipped.

Any errors? (look at the entire comm log)
Are we talking about the extruder heater or the heated bed?

Looks like extruders heater error. I'll take a picture of the error tonight. Should I just reload the firmware first?

Well, you can that won't hurt, but I sort of doubt it will help.
    Go for it.

The error will tell us what to look at.

So I just searched and saw its a ad thermistor or thermistor connection. If I use a volt meter what should I be looking owing for to trouble shoot.

With the power off read the resistance of the thermistor.
    Should be ball-park 100k ohms.

Try reading it while moving the extruder around by hand and see if it jumps any.
Mine was doing this as soon as it started the autolevel dance (after preheat) on one unit and best I can figure it just cools down too far, too quick during the autolevel routine (and marlin does NOT maintain the temperature while autoleveling). For that machine I modified my startup GCode to autolevel THEN heat the extruder (and wait until temp to start printing). Bit of a pain that, but it worked.

If you care to try that trick here is what I use:

    G28 ; home all axes
    G1 Z5 F5000 ; lift Z by 5mm
    M565 Z-0.6 ; set the offset for auto-leveling mechanism
    G29 ; run auto-level
M109 S[temperature] ; set the extruder temp and wait

You would alter S[temperature] to something like S200 (for 200c)

I broke down and ordered the stud thermistor from @Printed Solid. Been wanting to do that for a while.

Back up and running. Glad I upgraded to the stud version. The old thermistor had melted and fused in the small hole. Luckily the stud uses the threaded hole only.

What is the stock thermistor value setting in the firmware?
