How does the 3D R1 compare to Delta style printers?

I love my 3D R1 because it simply works and it works great. But I've always thought that the Delta style printers look really cool and I'm wondering if they are as good as our Robo printers? The general opinion from what I've gathered on the net is that they aren't as accurate with fine prints like the normal XYZ printers. Plus supposedly they require a lot more tinkering with than the traditional 3D printer would need.

What do you guys think? Would it be worth my time to switch over to a Delta style printer?

What have you been reading? My research around the internet says that Delta style printers (usually the Rostock Max V2 as the baseline) leave cartesian style printers in the dust in almost every way if they're put together properly (speed, accuracy, etc.).

They usually use a more advanced controller board than the Robo does (smoothieboard), so that should be expected.

My attention is on an Orion Delta printer that's like $900.

I am pretty sure that the Orion and Rostock Max from SeeMeCNC both use a RamBO board, which is still a RAMPS style 8-bit board, not a Smoothie.

Yeah, sorry, forgot about upgrading to a Smoothieboard being like how we have so many people putting V6 hotends on the Robo.

Just looked on Youtube and the responses are pretty much the same as other Delta users. Problems with getting the machines calibrated and whatnot.

To be fair, we see an awful lot of that around here as well.

I'm really itching to buy a Delta but most of the Youtube videos say the printers require much more attention than printers like ours.

What does Tom Salanderer say about them?

I think Tom likes Deltas, more because of their elegance than function. Although his gargantuan printer is a delta. One advantage is that they can be significantly faster than the Robo's Mendel90 based design. Also, X/Y/Z repeatability may be greater since the bed is stationary in the delta (the delta effector has less mass to move than the bed and is less affected by inertia).

I'm pretty close to buying the Rostock Max V2 but I'm still gun shy about all the calibration issues that are floating around on Youtube. Meanwhile my 3D R1 just keeps trucking right along.

Most FDM printers (regardless of style/type) have this issue. Once you get them calibrated they are golden.

I'd buy the Rostock if I could read a lot more good things than bad.

The internet is an echobox. The people that are happy with it aren't ranting and raving about it. Only the people with issues post

The 3D printing group on facebook is in love with it if you want some more perspective.
