I've been chasing adhesion problems for the last few days since and I'm starting to wonder if it's because of my filament oiler? I say this because after I print something I can look on the print surface and I see like an oily residue and that has me thinking that's the culprit of my adhesion issues? Or maybe it's because I might be using too much oil?

Likely too much oil in the oiler, you just need a few drops. I oil every time I use PLA. But I only print PLA maybe once a month. It's just not my preferred filament.

Oiler all the time. Sometimes even when not PLA, but always for PLA (and we print a lot of PLA).

Like @WheresWaldo pointed out... you do not need a lot of oil.

I hear people say only use one or two drops but I can't see how that does anything. Here's why... I use an unrolled cotton ball then I stick it in the oiler. Just one or two drops doesn't even remotely come close to wetting the cotton enough for it to touch or reach the PLA. Or am I missing something here?

    Cotton?
    I use a sponge.
You only ever want a very fine sheen of oil on the filament. It is meant for reseasoning only.

Can u post a pic of your oiler setup? As in how deep does your sponge go inside your oiler?

About 1/2 of an inch -- the oiler is barely 1/2 square.
Mounts right on top of the filament feed using the same screws.

I run an oiler all the time. Never had adhesion issues as the oil will not pass through the orifice

Clean your glass with alcohol and make sure not to drip oil on ti.

Also use less oil in the oiler than you think you might need. Just a drop or 2 is plenty

I was finally able to successfully print this cookie cutter for my wife without it getting ripped off the bed usually around mid print. I accomplished this by not using my oiler. This tells me I must have been using too much oil.

How do u have this mounted? I'm looking at how it would look on mine but I don't see how I can feed the filament past the tiny hole and getting it aligned with the hobble bolt?

Can u post a pic of your setup?

It sits right on top of the feed to the hobbed bolt The screws that hold the filament against the hobb go through those holes. Filament goes in top and out the tiny hole at the bottom and directly to the hobb.

Okay, now I get it. It seems like it's going to make it a lot harder to install new filament because the box will be directly on top now which won't allow any movement past the tiny hole from the box. I guess in a perfect world that'd be okay because in a perfect world the filament would feed straight down to the hole.

Too bad it's far from a perfect world. I will try your setup anyway.

    I don't get it.
To feed new filament correctly I always undo the two screws and open the feed.
That makes certain I get it fed in correctly and adds (oh, no!) about 1 minute to the filament loading time.

If that one is not to your liking there are a number of others on thingiverse :)

So you don't physically have the oiler mounted until after you're sure the filament is in where it should be? Then you mount the oiler box with the two screws? Okay, now I can see that working.

And of course i don't have not one stinkin' sponge around my house to do this.

No biggie. I just don't feel like battling the local Wal-Mart crowds just for a sponge right now. I will put that on our shopping list for the weekend. I'm actually curious to see how long I could go w/o running an oiler at all with not having any feeding or clogging issues?

    Perhaps a good while.

Seasoning does not have to be constant. But I did not want to wait for a jam to figure out it needed re-doing :)

@mark tomlinson How frequently do you add oil to your oiler?

I just printed one this morning and started using it. I put in 3 drops and I've printed about .5kg of filament today...

I created a small oiler box that drops into the slot on the top of the printer where you feed the filment down through.

A few drops every large print seems to be enough. You check the outgoing filament and as long as it has a very fine sheen of oil it is good. No more than that is needed.
