Keep getting an error through the MatterControl software that my extruder head has reached a max temperature even though it is not heated. Thoughts?

Look at what the thermistor is reporting back for temperature. If the thermistor is shorted or open circuit it will read bogus values (and one of those is a really high temperature). Bad thermistor or loose wire/connection to it will cause those sorts of issues.

Shorted shows max temp. You'll want to verify it by using a multimeter. Its a 100K resistor (more or less) at room temperature. I did recently have some wierdness where the heater shorted (no bueno) and the thermistor was good, but start with the thermistor and wires.
