I'm not very risk averse when it comes to myself, but am towards my wife and dog.

What overload protections are built into the printer and what are some people have added?

Well the ramps board has polyfuse protection from pulling too much current. Then the AC input switch has a fuse to prevent surges.

The firmware also has temp fall prevention in case the thermistor falls out to prevent thermal runaway.

Something like an unmanned fire extinguisher is always a good idea for any high temperature unmanned equipment, stoves, etc http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbrande...nguisher-2-Pack-675-3D/204656708?N=5yc1vZbmgp

A UPS or surge protector on the A/C side is a good idea as well.
