You can clean that off by heating up the nozzle and removing the boot and any plastic. Not sure it shorted out, can't tell from the picture. But at worst youd need to buy a new 25w heater cartridge which isn't very expensive

If you have warranty still they should have no issue helping you repair/replace that

The heater cartridge is sticking out considerably. Is that normal?

Not really normal, no. But I've seen crazier things

Should be able to clean it up I think.

Any idea how I can prevent this in the future?

Proper tightening of the nozzle to the heat break is a good start

Cleaned it up, put it back together and now I keep getting "cold extrusion prevented"even when the temp is good.

It keeps randomly setting the temp lower which is why its not at the right temp.
I just had it at 185, now its set to 175...

185 might be too low for the current firmware. I think you want higher (I already modified mine to make 175 the cold extrusion limit).
What software are you using? If it is MatterControl, do yourself a favor and try something that works.

If it continues to leak I would suggest replacing the hotend (E3d is a nice upgrade).

I am pretty sure that picture Hazrd posted was from Repetier-Host. My guess is that is what he is using.

Yea, looking at his picture/screenshot that may be a bad/intermittent thermistor (the way it is bouncing around).
Sanity check that the thermistor is correctly mounted and making good contact with the heater block.

(I hate the way Hexagons do this with just the rubber boot).

Might be a loose connection somewhere as well. Can you get it to stay at a stable 200C?

I didn't have time to check anything until now. Booted it up and it seems to be heating properly. I literally didn't touch anything.

The smell from it running is getting on my nerves though. It never bothered me until now. Nothing is smoking though so I think its okay.
