well you know your going to have to tell us more (and show the install in the projects thread). Very cool.
At one time I had contemplated this as an option for a 3D printer. Then thought that it was too much hardware for little return. I adjusted that thinking with thought of reversing the motion of the Z axis you could automate deep engravings with weaker laser hardware. Even to the point of cutting material with a few layer shifts in G-code.
Interested to see how far you get with this.
My printer is all-apart at the moment, I'm currently upgrading to a dual extruder setup. Once it's back together, this will be my next project
I use an Epilog laser engraver 36x48 at work and I know how important it is to have the Z offset calibrated to a specific height. The further away your laser is from your material, the focal beam widens more and looses its power concentration
I've got the code sorted for when you need, my install is just a little less fancy
