It took some time but with the help of Ziggy's thread my Z banding is gone at last. I had to redesign my coupler and the quality has increased by a TON.

If you followed all of Ziggy's tips, and still have banding, check if your lead screw is bent. If it's straight then print a new coupler.

    Nice work and great vids.
I noticed your z smooth rod mount is cracked too, which can contribute to z wobble. There's a couple replacement designs already on Thingiverse.

    Open source win.

Its all about modding and tuning. Then modding it again, so it needs massive tuning. I feel like most of my prints are mods for my printer.

This is why I'm scared of proprietary source machines. If it ain't perfect from the factory, it better be open.

Or you could just get rid of the couplers completely. I know it's cheaper to go the coupler route but if I were to spend the time and money on the lead screw issue I would just upgrade to integrated ones. Which I have personally. This is a cheaper route thought. Hopefully long lasting as well. Thanks for finding this for the ones that want to go the cheaper way.

The Quality increase is INSANE! The upgrade kit was...has been...and still is out of stock, so I got some sain smarts to work.

Yeah you have to play around with the sainsmart ones. They aren't plug and play. They have served me well for like 8 months now though. Glad you will be making a video for it. I started a guide a while ago bit got to lazy to finish it.

@Marquis Johnson I hope you outline how you mounted the Z Axis limit switches or link to the proper source/Thingiverse files.

I modeled my own mount. I show in the video how to model it just in case someone else has a different amount of Z banding changing the dimensions of the printed part. 2015-11-08_13-16-53.png

I see for quick and dirty you still use 123D Design. When you post the files, would you mind posting the 123D file also, it is just a zip file renamed and contains either a SMT or SAT (can't remember which) file that can be imported into other CAD programs. Especially nice since the free version of 123D can only output STLs.

Sure. so you mean I can model something in 123D and also get it to open in my Solidworks?

@Marquis Johnson Yes, 123D uses a standard BREP 3D model file. The .123dx package is simply a zip file that contains the BREP as /Fusion[Active]/Breps.BlobParts/BREP0.smt, there are also big and small jpg previews in /Fusion[Active]/Previews/. To import it into another application simply extract it from the .123dx and import it into your current application. At least that is how it can be done in Fusion 360. I don't know SolidWorks but I assume for the money it can import nearly any 3D file format. BREP is not an STL file, it describes a complete 3D model not just the shell.

Don't forget that you need a local copy, so use the Save to My Computer in 123D. No exporting as the free version only exports STL files.

I should add, you would be amazed at just how many file formats are just renamed ZIP or RAR files. I try to open everything with WinRAR at least once to see what I get.

Out of curiousity, why did you switch to inches when building the model of the adapter. A hint, test the first one then film the second one, it would make for better continuity in your video. How did you come up with 405 steps in your YouTube comments. those are TR8*8 lead screws, with 200 step (1.8°) motors, with 16 microsteps configured in Marlin. Each revolution (=3200 steps) moves the carriage 8 mm. In Marlin steps are designated per mm of travel, so 3200 steps / 8 mm = 400 steps.

Have you posted the solid model files anywhere yet?
